Our Innovations

The foundation of Bluestone's strength is our semiconductor patent portfolio for high-brightness light emitting diodes (HB LEDs) and laser diodes, most commonly formed from gallium-nitride based semiconductor layers deposited on a synthetic sapphire substrate.

U.S. Patent No. 6, 163, 557 (the '557) is Bluestone's flagship patent. The patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) technology described in the '557 patent is one of the core technologies that dramatically boosted the light output of HB LEDs. This technological advance gave rise to a revolution in illumination for consumer electronics. Suddenly, ultra-thin, energy-efficient, low cost, high-brightness, white light was possible. Applications for these developments led directly to many other bright ideas that can now be found in a wide variety of consumer electronics, including: ultra-thin flat panel LED backlight televisions or "LED TVs"; computer desktop, tablet, and laptop displays; extended battery life for mobile smart phones; and energy-efficient, long-life general illumination light bulbs to replace incandescent and fluorescent tubes everywhere.

Today, as the owner of the '557 patent, Bluestone and its affiliates are committed to fostering the widest application of this technology arising from American technological innovation, combined with enforcement against those unlicensed foreign manufacturers who would seek to illegally import infringing components or products into the United States.
